WARRIORS OF THE EMPIRE

KUNG FU MASTER

Courage, Strength, Skill - this is what a fighter needs in order of importance.

Embody the spirit of martial arts. Train every part of the body. Train furiously, train consistently, and fear no darkness.

This plan will give you flexibility, toughness, agility, muscle endurance and will give you lean and mean muscles.

There will be some focus on impressive calisthenic feats. Expect conditioning exercises, flexibility and mobility exercises, as well as calisthenic skill practice.

IRON CATAPHRACT

The Jurchen cavalry of the Jin dynasty was called the Iron Buddha, or Iron Tower cavalry by their Song Chinese enemies. Yue Fei, a famous general, had extremely difficult time fighting these formidable foes.

For cavalrymen, it is important to learn how to wield a lance, and how to use short weapons to fight other mounted warriors.

We will focus on the used of the spear in this program, as well as to develop strength using the club-bell.

LÜ BU - THE STRONGEST

“Among horses, Chi Tu, among people, Lü Bu.”

Such was the appraisal of the legendary warrior Lü Bu. He was regarded as the greatest fighter of his era, and the steed he rode was regarded as the finest horse.

Although his moral character leaves much to be desired, his strength and skill alone is to be admired and deserves to be emulated.

He is famed for his excellent marksmanship, and his legendary use of his halberd - the Fangtianhua Ji.

In this training package, we will focus on muscle endurance, agility, mobility, and ability to wield a Chinese style Halberd.

EIGHT BANNER BATURU

Frugality, practicality, and bravery. This is expected of the baturu - an honourary title bestowed upon exceptional warriors of the Manchu Qing Empire.

Warriors of the Qing empire also had to pass a physical test in order to gain a special ranking in the empire. At the end of the training plan, you will be able to pass this test as well.

This plan is an all round training program that focuses on strength, skills and consistency.

Special training tools required for this plan.

GUAN YU - LOYALTY AND HONOUR

Guan Yu is admired for his loyalty and honour. He was a man who would rather die than to forsake his ideals. He is also famed for his exceptional strength, as his first claim to fame was to lift a great stone off a well nobody else could lift. He is also famed for wielding a glaive of 80 Han dynasty catties (an estimated 20kg) - the Qinglongyanyue Dao.

He ultimately perished because his honour dictated that he could not flee before his enemy. He faced his death as he faced his life: head on, without fear.

This training package will focus on strength, lifting heavy things, and learning to wield the heavy and light version of the Chinese style glaive (Guandao).

Special training tools required for this plan.

SPARTAN AGOGE TRAINING

Spartan (Paides)

The Spartans were raised from childhood to become disciplined warriors. As children, they were taught how to write, poetry, and gymnastics. With this training plan, you will be prepared for the physical rigours that will test a Spartan throughout his or her life.

Spartan (Padiskoi)

As the Spartans reached their puberty, they would enter the next stage of their training. Specific skills would be trained, both mental and physical. It is at this stage we will be able to widen the range of exercises as the body and mind are now prepared for the next step.

Spartan (Hebontes)

When the Spartans reached young adulthood and neared their physical prime - this is when they were forged into fully flegded Spartiates. A warrior worthy of the name Sparta. At this stage we will deepen the skills previously learnt and finalize the three step program.

SAMURAI SHUGYO TRAINING

Bushi no Rei

The martial arts begin with respect and end with respect. Familiarise yourself with a bokken (wooden sword) and train the muscles necessary for becoming a samurai warrior (bushi). Through gratitude, and respect for your surroundings, your elders, your teachers, the food your eat and the things you use, you attain the first virtue: rei.

Bushi no Gi

There is no point in being capable if that capability is not used to serve justice. Your sense of righteneousness is the central to your growth as a bushi. As the training becomes increasingly vigorous, so does your responsibility as a strong person grow. Do not ignore injustice.

Bushi no Jin

Compassion. Compassion for all is the final stage. One can think to be righteous, but be mislead by his feeling of righteousness, if his heart is not guided by compassion. Compassion for others, but also compassion for oneself, and his shortcomings. Give often in charity, learn to accept yourself. And through compassion, realise that there is a greater purpose you must serve. Out of duty, realise that you cannot escape your destiny to be great.

GERMANIC TRANSFORMATION

Berserker

Nature is the book we should all learn from. The druids of old understood this, and so did the feared berserkers, who took on the aspect of fearsome beasts.

The exercises covered in this plan will make use of our connection to nature, and mimic animal movements. There is a focus on agility and functional calisthenic strength.

Moreover, the berserker did not only mimic the movement of the animal, they also attempted to have the spirit of the animal enter into themselves. In this way, when we train, we attempt to embody the animal in each movement we practice, so that we will lose ourselves in the moment, and become like the berserkers of old.

This plan will teach you to emotionally involve yourself in your training and be fully present in whatever you are doing.

Varangian

The Varangian Guard was, for a long time, the elite guard of the Byzantine Emperors. These warriors were able to fight with reckless abandon, fearing pain nor death.

The Varangians were also famed for their use of the Dane axes. We will make use of the mace-bell as an analogue to their axe training.

It is important to be able to face your training, even though you dread it, even though you fear to hurt.

This plan focuses on the usage of a mace-bell, and the ability face your fears in training.

Einherjar

The Einherjar can be defined as the one who fights himself, or the one who has defeated himself. he is the one who has defeated his own desires and was able to unite with a greater cosmic purpose.

They were brave men who died in battle, sword in hand, who were carried up to the halls of the fallen, where they would fight and feast until the end of times.

In order to live up to this name, this package will focus on defeating the self. To be constantly fighting your own ego. To fight the lower soul in order to reach a higher purpose. Expect pain, expect tears, and perhaps, at the end, the Valkyries may carry you to a higher purpose.

SHAOLIN SHAPE

Upasaka (Lvl 1)

Upasaka, or Youposai is a lay follower of the Buddhist teaching who has taken the five vows (Pancasila). Keeping to its namesake, this training plan will also encourage you to live u to the following precepts:

  1. I will not take the life of a sentient being;

  2. I will not take what has not been given to me;

  3. I will refrain from sexual misconduct;

  4. I will refrain from false speech;

  5. I will refrain from becoming intoxicated.

This is the first step in the Shaolin program, and as such will prepare your body and mind in flexibility and endurance mainly.

Stretching and muscle endurance are a focus in this plan.

Teetotalling (not partaking in alcohol or other intoxicants) is also part of this training plan.

Samanera (Lvl 2)

Samanera, or Shami, is a “young renunciate”. It is someone who has begun on the path of asceticism. In Buddhist context, this is someone who has taken the monastic vows, but have not yet received full ordination.

The Samanera shall do their best to follow the following precepts:

  1. Refrain from killing/harming living things.

  2. Refrain from stealing.

  3. Refrain from unchastity (sensuality, sexuality, lust).

  4. Refrain from lying.

  5. Refrain from taking intoxicants.

  6. Refrain from taking food at inappropriate times (after noon).

  7. Refrain from singing, dancing, playing music or attending entertainment programs (performances).

  8. Refrain from wearing perfume, cosmetics and garland (decorative accessories).

  9. Refrain from sitting on high chairs and sleeping on luxurious, soft beds.

  10. Refrain from accepting money.

The restraints put on your actions will serve to purify your mind and allow you to focus.

Teetotalling (not partaking in alcohol or other intoxicants) is also part of this training plan.

Bhikkhu (Lvl 3)

A Bkihhku, or Biqiu, is an ordained monk. This is a man who lives as a medicant, and has renounced his wordly possessions. The Bhikkhu follows 227 rules, but these are too long and detailed to list here. In our program, know that there will be many precepts to follow and that the training will be the most rigorous and strict, because they are combined with other daily behavioral limitations.

Know that if you follow this 6 month plan consistently your mind and body will be altered. However, you will not get there without earnestly putting in the work.

Teetotalling (not partaking in alcohol or other intoxicants) is also part of this training plan.

MIND AND MUSCLE MUSLIM

Seeker (Lvl 1)

Your body is gift from Allah. It is incumbent upon every Muslim to take care of your body, as your body has a right over you.

Just as your soul requires regular prayers to be maintained and kept cleanly, so does the body require regular exercise to maintain health.

This plan will focus on regularity and consistency. This is a plan that will teach you to plan. There will be additional focus on waking early, and maintaining set times for regular exercise.

This plan will not focus on exerting yourself to the fullest every training.

Teetotalling (not partaking in alcohol or other intoxicants) is also part of this training plan.

Student (Lvl 2)

Exercise is not the only aspect required to maintain the body. Using the right nutrition to feed your body is quite important as well.

This plan will guide you through attaining a sustainable balance between exercise, sleep, and nutrition.

As it is a prophetic sunnah to run and swim, this plan will focus on these exercises.

This plan will focus on the construction and maintenance of beneficial habits.

Teetotalling (not partaking in alcohol or other intoxicants) is also part of this training plan.

Janissary Training

The Ottoman Yeniçeri were famous on the battlefield. These soldiers, on top of being quite skilled with the rifle, were also training in horsemanship, swordsmanship, and famously (and rather dubiously), their slapping skills. The myth goes that the slap of the Ottoman would be trained on slabs of wet marble, their hands would be tough, and their minds tougher still. Even though it is a myth, it will serve well as the central theme of this training to attain iron arms and hands.

This training will also focus on the prophetic sunnah of wrestling.

This plan will focus on wrestling skills, arm strength, grip strength, and hand conditioning.

Teetotalling (not partaking in alcohol or other intoxicants) is also part of this training plan.

Special equipment required.

Servant (Lvl 3)

It is said that the physically strong believer is more beloved to Allah than the physically weak believer. When we have constructed beneficial habits, we have constructed a foundation to grow upon.

It is in this stage of the training we can dedicate ourselves towards improving, and growing to our fullest potential as a way to give thanks to Allah.

This plan will build upon the habits of the previous two plans, and increase the level of intensity of exercise. It will push you to strive for the best, every single exercise.

Teetotalling (not partaking in alcohol or other intoxicants) is also part of this training plan.

Mamluke Muscle

Mamlukes were feared Islamic warriors who defeated the Mongols at Ayn Jalut in a watershed moment that changed the course of history. They owe their victory to their professionalism. They had what it took to be a true soldier, and honed their craft to perfection.

In treatises we find their dedication to horsemanship, the lance, archery, and swordsmanship. For each of these aspects, modern analogues have been found. Of course, the daily routine of a Mamluk warrior did not exclude remembrance of Allah and steadfast prayer.

This plan will focus on arm strength, back strength, cardiac conditioning, and the construction and maintenance of beneficial habits.

Teetotalling (not partaking in alcohol or other intoxicants) is also part of this training plan.

Special equipment required.
